Fine, we admit that English is the world language. It's the language of international business, of science and technology, and popular culture. It is the language of the Internet. But that won't always be the case. There will be a number of world languages in the future. English will be one of these (probably) but so will Spanish, Chinese and Hindi. A lot of it just has to do with pure demographics. The populations of the Spanish-speaking world and China are bigger and growing faster than those in the English speaking world. And you shouldn't be left out.
Let's say that you don't know your gracias from your xie xies but you're not convinced you want to learn the next super-language anyway. On a personal level, I don't think I'd be very happy knowing that I could only have access to a quarter of the stuff on the Internet; currently I have an assumption that I can find the most up-to-date information on anything in English. This may not be true as other economies take off, and locals chooses to web-publish in their native languages. More and more people are learning multiple languages. Our peers in other countries - some fluent in up to five languages - are more employable than monolingual English speakers. Language abilities must become a core skill of a global worker - there is a definite advantage to being able to speak multiple languages.
The absolute best way to learn a language is to take a course in the country where the language is spoken. In this way, you can quickly put into practice what you learn. But learning a language is just one part or a much bigger equation. To enjoy a new country to the fullest, you need to understand what makes a place and its people tick. Being in the country while you learn a language allows you to pick up tips on the culture first hand, allowing you to really appreciate how to live and work in that country.
Whether it's because you're aching to be an international business mogul, feeling global peer pressure, or you just want to ask what you're eating at that street stall in Calcutta, studying a foreign language in another country is the only answer. But how do you choose a program that fits your needs (global advantages, survival skills, or simply curiosity)? There are loads of language schools for every language, and that's more than we are able to count. But some of these helpful web sites may be able to point you in the right direction toward linguistic freedom.
